Isaiah 53 includes both the language of redemptive suffering as well as victory language Isaiah He would be the means by which Israel experienced the forgiveness of sins and their long awaited end of exile. The gospel writers did not pepper their gospel accounts with atonement theories but they wove their own interpretation of the death of Jesus into the fabric of their Spirit-inspired narratives. Jesus described the meaning of his own death in the clearest of terms in the Upper Room as he shared the Passover meal with his disciples.
Jesus transformed the Passover meal from looking back towards the Exodus to looking forward to his pending death. The death of Jesus would be an experience of liberation and victory. This offering of his life was an announcement of the coming of the kingdom from heaven to earth.
This new Exodus event coming through the death of Jesus would be an act of forgiveness of sins and thus the long-awaited end to exile and a defeat of the dark powers.
This Is Love: Tracing The Love of God throughout the Biblical Story
Atonement from the perspective of this sacred meal is more of a story for Christians to enter than an abstract theory to try to understand. The forgiveness of sins by the death of Jesus was necessary for the story, which has the redemption of the world as its great goal, to continue. Paul draws upon redemption language in his letter to the Romans:. They are freely declared to be in the right, to be members of the covenant, through the redemption which is found in the Messiah, Jesus. God put Jesus forth as the place of mercy, through faithfulness, by means of his blood.

God did not choose Israel in order to confer most-favored-nation status upon one nation. Rather God choose Israel so that through Israel God could shine the light of his love to all the families of the earth.
Songs of love to God
Times when the Bible God is worse than Satan. In the Bible, Satan is described as a roaring lion who prowls the earth, seeking whom he may devour. Instructions for slave masters. The reality is that the Bible says much more in support of slavery than against it. Even the New Testament Jesus never says owning people is wrong. Instead, the Bible gives explicit instructions to masters and slaves. Bizzare death penalties. And so does the dog who belongs to your kinky neighbor. Denigration of handicapped people. The yuck factor is probably wired into humanity at the level of instinct, a way to avoid contamination and pathogens.
Shit smells bad to us, as does decaying flesh. Our revulsion at illness and injury fuels a whole Hollywood horror industry.
The Bible - Other Ancient Civilizations - Classical Literature
Modern Christians largely escape their denigration of physical handicaps. Moral edicts that demand too much.
If much of the Bible gets ignored because it is morally irrelevant, immoral, outdated, or factually wrong, another portion gets ignored because it sets the bar too high, like putting divorce on par with—omg—homosexuality. If you want to send a conservative Bible-believer into a froth, try suggesting Jesus was a socialist.
The New Humanity
Then, when he goes all Jehovah on you, quote from the book of Ephesians. Passages that are a waste of brain space and paper. I had the idea that I would go through the Bible and pull out bits that were relevant, so I started reading.
What I found was that most of the Bible was neither horrible nor inspiring. On top of that, it was badly written, with some stories garbled and others repeated, though rarely in complete agreement about the facts. Buy Now, Pay Later.
