I held off reviewing this book because it seemed so obvious how the story had to end. Just as Mr. Masur's terrific account of the inaugural World Series, in , tells of the Boston Red Sox winning an improbable come from behind victory over the mighty Pittsburg Pirates of Honus Wagner, so too would the Red Sox win a hundred years later Alas, it was not to be.
However, as we settle in for a long winter of second-guessing Grady Little, Mr. Before and even during the season, it had seemed that baseball might succumb to the forces that had been splintering the sport for decades: owners' greed, players' rowdyism, fans' unrest. Yet baseball prevailed, and Masur tells the equally dramatic story of how it did so, in a country preoccupied with labor strife and big-business ruthlessness, and anxious about the welfare of those crowding into cities such as Pittsburgh and Boston which in themselves offered competing versions of the American dream.
His colorful history of how the first World Series consolidated baseball's hold on the American imagination makes us see what one sportswriter meant when he wrote at the time, Baseball is the melting pot at a boil, the most democratic sport in the world.

Well written and researched. The author is a fan, and his enthusiasm helps move the book along. I liked the in between chapters covering the era baseball existed in at the time more than the recounting of the games themselves.
Overall very enjoyable. Nov 08, Linda rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fiction , baseball. In the end, critics concluded, "no amount of eloquence can alter the fact that a foul is not a strike, any more than it is a strawberry shortcake. The games "had the true ring of championship ball," but fans were cautious in their expectations.
