Loosely woven, this history of the Rom people is also a travelogue, following the passage of identity, back up the road of exile to the ancestral village, one of many, where the author's vanished family is remembered as they were when, most un-gypsylike, they were at home.

One of the best book-length poems I've ever read. I learned a lot about how to sustain narrative over the course of a long poem with this book.
The Gypsy And The Wind - Poem by Federico García Lorca
Cecilia explores both the persecuted lives of "gypsies" and the magnificent piece of their culture that is survival. Jun 11, Julia rated it liked it. Really liked the Rom historical timeline juxtaposed with and part of the poetry, as well as the way it sort of toyed with odd rhythms and rhymes at times. But a lot of the poetry felt sort of grasping for a sort of lyricism that it didn't seem to actually achieve.

Oct 28, Rebekah rated it it was amazing. I enjoyed reading the snippets about the history of the Roma people who I previously knew very little about. The poetry was interesting and beautiful, describing Wolloch's personal journey as she learns about the history of her people. I also must mention I did enjoy hearing her as a guest speaker in one of my classes and found her as lovely as her work.
A fairly quick read that one won't regret. Jul 13, Elizabetmarshall rated it it was amazing. After the reading, I introduced my to Cecilia and went to her poetry workshop a few days later. The rest is history and Cecilia has been my incredible poetry coach ever since. Nov 10, Lisa Allender rated it really liked it.
The Gypsy and the Poet by David Morley
This volume is like the poet herself--engaging, gorgeous, witty, with more than a hint of sorrow. Oh little shadow. Little lurker into doorways. Little Gypsy Gypsy Gypsy of a girl. Whose bird you were. Whose darkling in the branches on the underside of morning thrashed them shimmering with parting as I turned. Who disappeared. Each bitter word or look dropped like a coin into your pocket, small gold hidden in the blind folds of your skirt.
Scarborough Gypsy Poems
Come close. In cities made of falling and not falling, smell of smoke. Smell of wind and blood and ashes. Smell of dancing and of soot. And when you ran — burned from the clearing, all those black wings beating, beating — who ran with you, just behind you or before you, also flew? So spit your luck into the embers.
