Gascon , Les Poetes Grevcs [sic] de Mr. The Roman authors are mainly prose writers popular in schools, with Cicero reigning supreme. The private libraries of manor owners, which are relatively well documented for the eighteenth century, show the importance of French translations of both Greek and Latin classics, Finland being in this respect no exception to Continental trends. As to private collections belonging to such men as military officers, Lutheran ministers and merchants, classical authors studied at school are well represented: Cicero De officiis , letters, speeches and philosophical works , Cornelius Nepos, Quintus Curtius, Virgil, Horace, Ovid, Terence, Sallust, Aesop and Tacitus in Latin, both in the original and, occasionally, in German, Swedish and French translations.
By chance, a most remarkable library has survived the perils of the twentieth century to bear witness to the Enlightenment in Russia. Like so many other western Europeans of the time, Nicolay from von Nicolay embarked on a brilliant Russian career during the reigns of Catherine II and Paul I, his former pupil. The Nicolay part of the collection continued to grow after Ludwig Heinrich's death and that of his son, the diplomat Paul von Nicolay — , until Both theory and meticulous documentation of monuments and works of art seem to have been his central concerns, as illustrated by sumptuous volumes by Piranesi and works on the ruins of Herculaneum.
The library is a reflection of the personality and interests of the first lord of Monrepos and his son.
Visual Cultures of Secrecy in Early Modern Europe
The eastern province of the Kingdom of Sweden may have been thinly populated and weakly urbanized till the end of the eighteenth century, but international trends seem to have reached the Magnus Ducatus Finlandiae , whether through the study of Swedes and Finns at key centres of learning and culture, as in the case of Michael Agricola, or through books purchased or borrowed, as in the case of the average Academia Aboensis student in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The establishment of the Academia Aboensis ensured continuous contact with the rest of the Res publica litterarum.
Despite the economic, political, religious and cultural turbulence of the period, members of the nobility, the officer elite, clergy and merchants seem to have got hold of both older and more recent literature on most varied subjects, including ancient and humanist authors and scholarship. Within this context, the cultural life of the Grand Duchy of Finland is solidly anchored in Continental developments.
